Reflexion Pressure Care Seating

Reflexion is a truly remarkable seating system that moulds itself to the contours of the user, this helps to spread the body weight more evenly across a greater surface area. This function is essential to avoid localised interface pressure on the critical parts of the body subjected to compression and possible tissue damage.

In a recent clinical evaluation, the Reflexion cushion demonstrated positive pressure ulcer prevention outcomes in every subject. No incidence of pressure ulceration was reported, even on patients regarded as being at high, or even very high risk. Indeed, there was encouraging evidence to support its use for reducing non-blanching hyperaemia as all patients with this condition were free of tissue breakdown at the end of the trial. However, assessments will continue to further evaluate its performance.

COMPARE A REFLEXION SEAT CUSHION'S PERFORMANCE WITH THAT OF AN ORDINARY SEAT CUSHION

The two pressure maps illustrate the amount of pressure being exerted by the human body sitting on a conventional healthcare seat cushion (map 1), compared with a Reflexion seat cushion (map 2).

Both tests were conducted using a healthcare chair, and an identical protocol was applied to each.

The lightest areas of contact are shown in blue, whilst the heaviest are shown in orange.

Pressure map 1, Conventional seat
Pressure map 2, Reflexion seat

The two tests clearly illustrate that the conventional seat cushion allows the user to sit through the cushion because it does not have the function to adequately support, or disperse, weight effectively. This is illustrated in map 1 highlighting a large proporation of the buttocks, which is the area at greatest risk. In fact the pressure being exerted has approached the maximum level within the test criteria. Of equal importance are the tall thin peaks, highlighting an extreme localised intensity of pressure. This is more likely to be associated with the cause of tissue breakdown. Sustained pressure at this level will become intolerable especially for those without the ability to allieviate the discomfort for themselves, this is also a contributory factor in the development of pressure related ailments.

In complete contrast, the Reflexion seat cushion shows a substantial reduction in interface pressure around the critical area of the buttocks and is completely devoid of any pressure contact areas. The peaks are shallower and have gentle gradients indicating that the weight is not localised and has been distributed much more evenly.

All foams are classified according to performance; therefore class becomes the measure of performance and durability. Each separate composite of a Reflexion seat conforms to BS3379 class "V", intended for use in very severe applications. Many cushions in this sector are not ... BEWARE OF IMITATIONS.

Ergonomics

Ergonomics in the workplace has become increasingly prominent in the last decade with employers beginning to understand the many benefits of ergonomically designed products. It is the key ingredient to a healthier, safer and happier workforce.

In 2002 the British Contract Furniture Association launched an approved product award which was given to only 4 products for excellence in design practice and product performance. Reflexion seating was awarded one of the four awards.
